Program Addressing Student Food Insecurity

  • Free Food

The Directorate of University Services at Oum El Bouaghi University offers free food to approximately 18,700 students and 2,200 staff members. This includes providing three basic meals; students pay a nominal fee per each meal, which is managed through a ticketing system for meal counting. These meals are funded by the Algerian public treasury, and it is guaranteed that they are healthy and balanced by involving university residence doctors, food service supervisors, and student representatives.

The Directorate of University Services at Oum El Bouaghi University also provides financial support to students regarding food security and fighting hunger. It actually offers free education, free meals, free accommodation, free transportation, and a financial grant. All of this support alleviates financial pressures on the student, allowing them to allocate their funds to other academic needs.

  • Food Availability on Campus

Within our university, a chain of restaurants is in charge of the Directorate of University Services. These restaurants facilitate students’ access to food, saving them the trouble of leaving the campus during study hours and preparing their own meals in their halls. Oum El Bouaghi University has restaurants that are located next to the faculties; for example, map 1 shows the availability of two restaurants on the main campus.

Additionally, nine (09) restaurants are located near residence halls where students can have their meals conveniently. These restaurants provide food for students living in proximity.
