The main object of the present project is the evaluation of literature teaching programs. The programs targeted are the ones developed on the basis of the guidelines laid down by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research for the field of English, more specifically those of British and American literature. The project is intended to be carried out through a number of studies, each of which laying focus on one particular component of the course. First, evaluation will target the goals and objectives of literary program in order to assess their worth and determine the extent to which they were founded on solid pedagogical backgrounds. Special attention will be devoted to the language component in order to determine how and the extent to which it is integrated within the different components of the programs to address the needs, the wants and the necessities of the learners. Literary programs will be evaluated from the perspective of the approaches and methods used in the instruction in order to assess the extent to which they respond to recent trends of literature and language teaching. Equally important in this project is the evaluation of content and content selection procedures so as to assess the worth of the literary texts chosen against the rich literary heritage of the target language, and also to determine how the source and target cultures are reconciled as far as literary content is concerned. Along with the assessment of content and its selection procedures, the tasks that teachers use in literary classes will also be targets for evaluation. Another important aim of the project will be the evaluation of the practices of assessment, testing and evaluation that are carried out by teachers in the process of instruction.This is deemed necessary to determine how teachers make use of these procedures, in particular with regard to how they use them to assess the extent to which their instructional goals and objectives are fulfilled. The goals of the present evaluative project will not be fully attained without addressing the issue of teacher development. This is very important considering that teachers need to possess what it takes to be able to execute the different roles related to the various component s of the instructional program and to be able to evaluate such components and their worth themselves.The roles of the members in the team concerned with the present research project will be assigned based on the different goals and objectives of the project as described earlier, where one member or two cover one aspect of the evaluation of the program under consideration.
