Equipe 03 : Language, Society and Multilingual Education in Algeria: Issues, Challenges and Trends
Description scientifique du programme de recherche de l’équipe :
Our research team plans to conduct research works, both large scale and small scale, to investigate sociolinguistic diversity in its wider societal and educational arenas in Algeria.Basically, the research team will consider four basic research objectives:
Aim 1:
Our research team will examine the intertwined interplay between language variability in Berber varieties and various social parameters, such social network, ethnic composition and mobility in urban areas and predominantly rural areas in Algeria. Using quantitative and ethnographic methods, we seek to investigate (and quantify) the extent to which social factors influence various levels of Berber varieties, such phonology, lexis and grammar.
Aim 2:
The research group will investigate patterns of Language shift and maintenance of Berber varieties in predominantly urban areas. We will study the socio-demographic backgrounds of migrant (exodus) Berber families in urban settings and foreground their language uses and choices in various formal and informal contexts. We believe that by examining language uses of Berber families, along with their sociological merits, we will be able to understand the current dynamics of language shift and track its trajectories in the future.
Aim 3:
The research group sets the task to explore the role of Berber families, their attitudes and practices, in maintaining heritage varieties at home. In essence, the team will explore the various linguistic practices, such as one-parent-one language method, used by parents (or caregivers) when interacting with their children. Exploring such linguistic choices and ideologies, it is assumed, will answer many questions, such as: why do some Berber children, who belong to characteristically monolingual families, become multilingual in more than one variety? Why do some children lose their mother tongues at a certain point in their life span? We will, also, consider the impact of family structure, be it nuclear or extended, in children’s language development.
Aim 4:
We will study, in details, the role of schools and, by and large, educational institutions in preserving or shifting heritage varieties. The role of schooling will be examine in relation with other factors, such Family Language Policies, attitudes and peer effect.
