Economic expert Mourad Kowachi to “Al Ittihad”: Algeria has become a significant energy player in the region.

Economic expert Mourad Kouachi believes that Algeria has become a significant energy player in the region. After ensuring the supply of 12% of the European Union’s energy needs, including fossil fuels, Algeria is now the EU’s largest energy supplier, following Russia and Norway. In an interview with “Al Ittihad,” Mourad Kouachi disclosed that Algeria has introduced an energy transition strategy by relying on a diversified energy mix. He emphasized the fact that the government is required to increase investments in traditional fossil energies to fulfill its commitments to European customers. Simultaneously, Algeria must invest in and formulate a transition plan towards alternative or renewable energies, particularly solar energy and green hydrogen. This approach aligns with the vision of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who emphasizes the importance of initiating the use of these two vital energy sources in every council of ministers.
Regarding the use of solar energy, Kouachi highlighted Algeria’s vast desert areas, where solar energy is abundant. This positions Algeria among the global leaders in terms of solar radiation hours. To harness these energy sources, advanced and modern technologies are required. Therefore, Algeria needs to seek partners who possess advanced technologies for utilizing solar and green hydrogen energy. He stressed that Germany is among the leading countries with advanced technology, especially in the field of solar energy. Based on this, Mourad Kouachi indicated that Algeria needs to invest through partnerships with Germany to exploit solar energy, which is a significant and prospective source of hard currency. Through solar energy, electricity can be generated and exported to European countries and neighboring nations. He considers the partnership with Germany to be highly beneficial for both parties. Germany requires energy, especially amid the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian crisis, while Algeria needs German technology for utilizing alternative and renewable energy sources.
