Interventions to Alleviate Hunger Among Students and Staff

The University of Oum El Bouaghi has worked on providing food clubs and shops for students and staff near teaching spaces and inside the university halls. These food clubs and stores play a vital role in ensuring food security, preventing hunger, and nurturing a sense of nutritional security among students and staff on campus. They function as indispensable sources of sustenance, ensuring continuous access to nutritious meals throughout the day. Importantly, they provide students and staff with a reliable solution to their nutritional needs without bearing the burden of food insecurity.

Additionally, the availability of food clubs and stores for students and staff within the university campus at various times during the day is vitally important. The extended meal hours accommodate diverse academic and work schedules, meeting the needs of a varied population residing on campus. Students and staff can rely on these clubs whenever needed not only for their main meals but also for snacks, refreshments, and coffee. This convenient access plays a crucial role in addressing food insecurity by providing flexibility in obtaining meals, ensuring the alleviation of hunger at different times, and enhancing a growing sense of food security. It is worth noting that these clubs and shops do not merely offer sustenance; they also instill confidence in meeting individual nutritional needs, enabling individuals to focus on their educational and professional endeavors.

The University Services Directorate offers food club and food store services as part of additional services for students and staff, and these facilities are managed by the private sector or the social services for workers.

The University of Oum El Bouaghi emphasizes the importance of alleviating academic stress and pressure resulting from students’ concerns about food insecurity and hunger while having their classes. Our university is committed to providing flexible meal times through two fundamental interventions. Firstly, we extend the dining hours and offer multiple meal times to accommodate various class schedules and ensure that students can access meals without pressure. Breakfast is available from 6:30 am to 8:00 am, lunch extends from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, and dinner is served from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm.

Secondly, we adapt teaching schedules to the meal times for students. The university provides students with ample time between the teaching sessions to allow them to access the university restaurants without feeling rushed, especially during lunchtime. Resident students have their breakfast and in their halls.
